// Why Leads For Lawyers

We’ve mailed twenty million letters for three thousand law firms. Here’s what we’ve learned.

Leads For Lawyers is a legal direct mail company founded in 1992 by Austin Burt, a former Coca-Cola USA marketing executive who spent his first years in this business sitting with defendants and their families on behalf of Los Angeles defense firms. It mails same-day personalized First-Class letters and brochures to newly arrested and newly served defendants for subscribing law firms — 3,000+ firms, 20,000,000+ pieces, all 50 states, three mail houses.

That the person opening the envelope can tell a form letter from a real one at arm’s length. That a premium piece, arriving first, says something about the firm before a word is read. That attorneys don’t want leads — they want their phone to ring. And that this is a business, but every envelope is a human story.

Austin Burt, founder and CEO of Leads For Lawyers

// The founder

Austin Burt: trained at Coca-Cola, taught at the kitchen table.

Austin Burt spent five years as a marketing executive at Coca-Cola USA, where the company’s president picked him to help lead Bev Serve, a Florida pilot that put Coca-Cola, Minute Maid orange juice and coffee brands on one distribution network. Within a year, by his account, the program took Coca-Cola’s fountain share in the Florida market the program served from 55% to 85%, and the model was rolled out to other states. What he took from it: an audience is a discipline, not a guess, and the design and copy of a message deserve the same seriousness as the product.

Then he moved to California, and a prominent criminal and federal defense attorney in Los Angeles asked him a plain question: how could the firm attract more clients? Austin built the answer from arrest information supplied by sheriff's departments and the California Highway Patrol in Los Angeles County, later the Los Angeles Police Department — personalized letters, mailed the same day the record arrived. The firm expanded the program across California. That was 1992, and it was the start of Leads For Lawyers.

The part that shaped everything since came at the next firm, a Los Angeles firm led by two former prosecutors — one a certified criminal law specialist, the other a former detective who had trained officers on California DUI law. There his work ran past the mailbox into intake: he went to prospective clients’ homes, sat with them and their families, and connected them with an attorney who could explain their options. He helped the firm open satellite offices across Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino, Riverside and Ventura counties; through the 1990s, the marketing and intake work he ran brought in more than $150,000 a month in signed retainers.

That is where the principle behind every piece comes from: behind each inquiry is a person who needs clear information, a respectful conversation and a way to get help. The mechanism is laid out hour by hour on how it works. Firms don’t deal with an account team that rotates every quarter. They deal with the person who has been doing exactly this, every business day, for 34 years.

// The person opening the envelope

They can tell a form letter at arm’s length.

Someone who was booked last night is not naive. They are street-smart, they are being sized up by everyone, and they have already thrown away mail that was obviously printed for anyone. What they are looking for — and this is the whole business — is a sign that someone took their situation seriously and will treat them like a person.

Austin learned that in living rooms, not from a survey. It is why the letter names the person and the charge, why the brochure is about their charge and not the firm’s awards, and why the tone is respectful rather than alarmed. And it is why he has spent years training firms’ own receptionists, secretaries and intake staff on the call that follows: the letter earns the phone call, and the first thirty seconds of that call earn the case. He wrote that up as the first of his Insights.

It is a business. It is also a human story, every envelope, and the pieces that work are the ones written by people who never forget that. The long version — what the reader is thinking, why they bin most attorney mail, and the first thirty seconds of the call — is the defendant’s side of legal marketing.

// Why the piece is premium

A premium piece says the firm pays attention to detail.

Most attorney mail is a one-page black-and-white letter in a plain business envelope, sent USPS Marketing Mail, arriving a week or two after the arrest. Nothing about it separates one lawyer from the next who sent the same thing. Leads For Lawyers costs more per piece on purpose. When a defendant opens a premium envelope and finds a letter and a brochure customized to their name and their case, the conclusion is the one the firm wants: a lawyer who took this much care with an envelope will take the same care with the case. The postage arithmetic and the production behind it are on First Class vs. Marketing Mail.

// The team behind the envelope

Data people, legal writers, and a production floor built for speed.

// What makes this different

Not a lead list. Not an agency retainer.

  • You never buy a list

    We don't sell data. We mail on your behalf — your name, your tracked number — and your phone rings. The prospect meets your firm, not a middleman.

  • Nothing is resold

    The lead-vendor trick — one prospect, five firms — can't happen here. Your market and offense categories are subscribed to you.

  • Everything is counted

    QR scans, tracked calls, durations, markets. You'll know what a campaign produced, because knowing is the product.

The channel itself — what it is, how attorneys get the records, and the solicitation rules that govern it — is covered in the complete guide to legal direct mail; the programs themselves are described under practice areas.

// Questions about the company

The company, answered plainly.

Who founded Leads For Lawyers?

Leads For Lawyers was founded by Austin Burt in 1992, and he remains its Founder and CEO. Before Leads For Lawyers he spent five years as a marketing executive at Coca-Cola USA; the company began in California when a criminal defense attorney asked how his firm could attract more clients, and the same-day arrest mailing Austin built for him worked.

Why does Leads For Lawyers mail First Class instead of Marketing Mail?

Leads For Lawyers mails every piece First-Class on the day the record is harvested because the letter has to arrive while the decision is still open. Most attorney mail goes USPS Marketing Mail and can take a week or two to land — by then the defendant has usually chosen. First Class costs more per piece; it is the price of being first.

What does a Leads For Lawyers mail piece consist of?

A Leads For Lawyers piece is a personalized letter and a full-color brochure matched to the charge, carrying the defendant's name and the firm's tracked number, in a premium envelope. It is printed on HP Indigo 120K industrial digital presses on premium paper stock — deliberately unlike a one-page black-and-white letter in a plain business envelope, so the firm reads as one that takes care.

Who makes the Leads For Lawyers pieces?

Leads For Lawyers is made by a team of 10+ data aggregators and software engineers responsible for record collection and solution design, two in-house graphic designers and two legal copywriters with decades in legal advertising, and 150+ people in print, finishing and fulfillment across three states at its three mail houses — Los Angeles, Milwaukee, and Atlanta.

Where is Leads For Lawyers located?

Leads For Lawyers is based at 629 Highland Avenue, Windermere, Florida 34786, and serves law firms in all 50 states. Print and mail run from three strategically placed mail houses — Los Angeles, Milwaukee, and Atlanta — positioned against USPS transit so each letter enters the postal stream close to its destination.

How long has Leads For Lawyers been in business?

Leads For Lawyers has been in business since 1992 — 34 years of mailing personalized First-Class letters to new defendants on behalf of subscribing law firms. Over that time it has mailed 20,000,000+ pieces for 3,000+ firms, and some clients, such as The Abt Law Firm in Atlanta, have mailed continuously since 2002.

Is Leads For Lawyers a lead generation company?

Leads For Lawyers is not a lead generation company — it sells no leads, lists, or data. It is a legal direct mail company: a law firm subscribes to a program scoped to its counties and offense categories, Leads For Lawyers mails personalized letters under the firm's name the same day a record appears, and the resulting calls ring the firm's own phone.

Which mail houses does Leads For Lawyers use?

Leads For Lawyers uses three mail houses — Los Angeles, Milwaukee, and Atlanta — covering the West, Midwest, and Southeast. Each piece is printed and mailed First Class the same day from the nearest of the three, placed so the letter enters the postal stream close to where it is going; the route is part of the product.
